Quick Divorce

‘How quickly can I get divorced’ is a question we are often asked. The answer is that it all depends on the circumstances of the case. A quick divorce is possible if there are no children or financial issues to resolve. A quick divorce is not possible where children and or financial issues are to be resolved. If pensions are in issue then it is usual to delay applying for the final Decree Absolute until the pension issues are sorted out. It is also important to understand that although it is possible to obtain a Decree Absolute within six months very often the financial issues will not be resolved until much later.

It is a popular misconception that the Decree Absolute finalises everything. It does not if there are outstanding issues concerning the children and or finances. At Betteridges we can advise you whether it will be possible to obtain a quick divorce. Most divorces these days are uncontested and the phrase ‘quickie divorce’ is applied to this procedure.

If a divorce is contested then different rules apply to the conduct of the case and a quick divorce will not be achieved if the proceedings become contested. Contested divorces are best avoided as the final hearing will be open to the public whereas a quickie divorce will remain private throughout .
